FAITH ABOVE FEAR
Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies.
Fear can be an indication of a lack of faith. It is human to imagine a worst-case scenario occurring in the future. Whether a pandemic, economic collapse, or something else entirely. We need to remember that God will be with us in that future? Do we see only fear, or is our attention fixed on Jesus, who heals all our diseases?
“Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies” (Psalm 103:2-4)
Fear is a form of thinking that we imagine a future in which God is not present. Even in a “worst-case scenario,” Jesus shows up and transforms the situation entirely.
“Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’” (Isaiah 41:10)
This does not invalidate the reality of grief and suffering. Jesus demonstrates His compassion for those who are suffering. We do not need to feel condemned for the fear we feel. It is natural to worry and, no matter how strong our faith is, we still deal with fear to some extent.
“For I will restore health to you And heal you of your wounds,’ says the Lord, ‘Because they called you an outcast saying: “This is Zion; No one seeks her.” ’ (Jeremiah 30:17)
This does challenge us to lift our perspective, so we are not defined by fear. No matter what occurs in this life, Jesus, the very Word of God, is with us. Jesus has authority over the enemy, and He has conquered death itself. We may go through challenges, but we live in hope.
“Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. (Isaiah 53:4-5)
It is all too easy and all too human to let fear grow bigger than God. Like the disciples, we follow Jesus during everyday life, but what happens when a challenge appears out of nowhere and threatens to come against us? How do we view Jesus? As a man who does not understand the danger of the situation? Or as a God who reigns over all the earth? Our perspective changes everything.
What will you choose today? Faith or Fear?
Heavenly Father, I give You thanks for Your Word as You are my refuge in the time of storm. Thank You for Your Word to comfort me as I face unknown challenges. I know You will work all things out for my good as I love and trust You, allowing no doubt, but casting down every imagination that comes against what Your Word says. This is the victory that overcomes the world, even my faith. Thank You for Your comfort in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
