There is no guarantee in the circumstances we are called to live out as Believers in our daily lives, that we will be completely protected from the hurtful words and actions we will experience from others. David wanted us to know that God provides the kind of shelter we need from the pain we may experience as His children.

“You shall hide them in the secret place of Your presence From the plots of man; You shall keep them secretly in a pavilion From the strife of tongues.” (Psalm 31:20)

David did not say, “Hide in the secret place,” but He did tell us to pray and give thanks to the Lord for His goodness “in the secret place of Your presence.” Prayer is an effort of our will.

After we enter into our secret place and shut the door, sometimes the most difficult thing for us to do is to pray.

Sometimes we can not seem to get our minds to concentrate, and the first thing we have to control is our thoughts from wandering. The battle in private prayer is overcoming the problem of our thinking. A good example of this:

Have you ever sat down to pray, and the next thing you did was remember an item that you needed at the store? It happens to the best of us. We need to learn to discipline our minds and to only concentrate on prayer.

“But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” (Matthew 6:6)

We must have a designated place for prayer, but once we get there, our minds begin to wonder, “This needs to be done, and I have to do that today.” The Bible tells us to “shut your door.” Having a stillness before God means deliberately shutting the door on our emotions and remembering Him.

God’s presence is in the secret place, and God sees us from “the secret place.” God does not see us as other people do, or as we see ourselves. When we truly spend time in God’s presence, it becomes impossible for us to doubt God.

“The LORD is good to all, And His tender mercies are over all His works.” (Psalms 145:9)

We become more sure of God than of anyone or anything else. We enter into His presence with God’s goodness, and we will find that God was right in the middle of our everyday circumstances all the time.

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.” (Psalm 23:6)

Get into the habit of spending time with God about everything happening in life. Unless we all learn to open the door of our lives and let God in from our first waking moment each day, we will be working on the wrong level throughout the day.

If we will swing the door of our lives fully open and “pray to the Lord who is in the secret place,” everything in our lives will be marked with the lasting impression of the presence of God.

If we will trust God, He will give us the strength and ability to withstand our circumstances as we put our hope and trust in Him.

Heavenly Father, the secret place of Your presence is the most precious place of life. This is where You give me strength and the ability to withstand my circumstances of the day. This is where I get the strength where You shall hide me in the secret place of Your presence From the plots of man; You shall keep me secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues. It is in this place where I learn to trust You, feel Your presence, and wait on You for Your wisdom for my day. It is in this place I get to know You as the answer to all of my life. I will trust in You, my Father, as I have my time with You each and every day. Thank You for the secret place with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
