YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD
You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
Jesus compares His followers to light, saying, "You are the light of the world," unable to be hidden. We do not put a lamp under a bowl because a lamp is designed to help people see in the dark. Jesus' words and actions showed the true nature of the world around Him.
"You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house." (Matthew 5:14-15)
Believers give light to those around them by doing and saying what Jesus did. By growing in a relationship with God every day, following Jesus step by step, we partner with Him in spreading the Gospel.
John, another of Jesus's disciples, said it this way: "This is the message we have heard from Him and declared to you: God is light; in Him, there is no darkness at all. When we claim to have fellowship with God and still walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live in the truth. If we walk in the light, as Jesus is in the light, we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus purifies us from all sin".
“This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:5-7)
Light can not be anything other than what it is. It is light; it dispels darkness; it allows people to see themselves. God is light, and since God sent His Holy Spirit to live inside us, we are light. As God's ambassadors on earth, we shine even when we do not know it.
Jesus told His disciples to "let your light shine before others," calling them to live an active faith, not a passive one. Put our light on its stand. Our circumstances are an opportunity to shine brightly for God and to share the Gospel with those around us. Our family and community can tell what you Believe by how you live.
What situation are you in right now that you have to exercise faith in God?
Heavenly Father, I ask You, through the help of Your Holy Spirit that lives in me, to show me if there is any darkness in me. I want my light to shine for only You so that others may glorify You through my life. What an honor knowing You live within me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
