AUDIO VERSION

When Jesus went up the mountain to teach the people who watched Him, they expected Jesus to announce a powerful new authority over the currently ruling party.

"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes, He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich." (2 Corinthians 8:9)

The Romans, who had occupied the land, had instituted a regime that caused violence and poverty toward the people.

In Jesus, they saw a King who was going to help them rid the Romans from their land and bring health and wealth to the people once again. No longer would they have to be slaves of the Roman empire; they would now live comfortably with King Jesus!

Imagine their confusion when Jesus said these world-changing words:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3)

When Jesus arrived, Jesus brought an entirely new ethic for living in the Kingdom of God. No longer were the people to compete for position and power, but instead, they were to become each other's servants.

Instead of storing up wealth, they were to give joyfully to all who had needs. Instead of seeking justice for wrongdoing, these new people were to live with generosity and forgiveness for all.

In Jesus' life, Jesus showed that the way we live our lives reveals how we are spiritually. Jesus modeled His life with this ethic when He humbled Himself and left His throne as King of Kings to come to our world, born in a manger.

On the cross, Jesus' life and death showed that His work was not of a physical Kingdom but a spiritual one.

It is this grace Jesus showed that Paul writes of in today's Bible verses. When we grasp how Jesus lived His life, we begin to understand how we should live our lives.

Jesus had the power and wealth as a King, but He chose to become a servant. Even if we have wealth and power in our lives, we are to serve those who are unlike us or even against us!

In this humility, the Believer is not powerless. Instead, they are at their most powerful and purposeful in their serving of others.

What does this life of humility look like for you? How would it change the way you live your life every day?

Heavenly Father, Thank You for sending Jesus to redeem me. As Jesus humbled Himself for us, it is the least I can do to give my life in obedience to You. I will serve those You put in my pathway and bring honor and glory to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
