AUDIO VERSION

One of the hardest things for us to do sometimes is to wait for something. It is not just that we live in an impatient society (we do), and it is not just that we can be selfish and demanding (we can), and it is not just because we tend to want life on our terms (we do). It is that waiting requires surrender of our most precious commodities: time.

“I waited patiently for the Lord; And He inclined to me, And heard my cry.” (Psalms 40:1)

Each day is precious, each day, each month, each year because we only have so many of them. When God tells us to “wait,” we think it is tougher to wait when we have pain lingering in our pasts. Yes, waiting is not for the spiritually weak but those strong of heart.

Obeying a “not yet” from God requires real faith. It is handing over our days and years and months to God, trusting that we will not regret holding off. It is believing God’s plan is truly the best plan even when several other enticing options tempt us. It is deferring what is good for what is best.

“For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for life; Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning.” (Psalm 30: 5)

Even in the middle of our unanswered prayers, we still believe God is not out to get us. God does not ask us to wait to torment us. In God’s perfect nature, God wants to give us more than we are currently asking for an answer. All the times in our lives that we have ignored God’s “wait” and taken matters into my own hands, a lot of time was wasted.

Those that wait on God will experience the joy that far surpasses any temporary pleasure that comes with forging ahead alone.’

Embrace the confidence of the psalmist today, knowing that we will see the goodness of God if we wait a while longer. Pray directly about what you are waiting for, then lay it down for the week. Then watch how God works in your life this week.

Are you waiting for an answer to your prayers?

Heavenly Father, I will wait patiently for what I ask You for, in faith, believing what You have said. I know You have heard my cry. I lay all my cares, on my knees, in surrender to You, knowing You love me and You will take care of me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
