AUDIO VERSION

We often use the truth as a weapon. The Bible never says God wants you to use the truth to harm one another. God wants us to share the knowledge of the truth with other people.

“to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:19)

We must use this in love. Think of somebody that you would like to help make a change. We need to realize people change faster when the truth is wrapped in love. Without love, the truth is always seen as an attack. If we say something offensively, guess what? It is going to be received defensively. We are never going to get anywhere.

“Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.” (Ephesians 4:29)

If it is not helpful, do not say it. If it is only for our benefit, do not say it. If we want to get something off our chests, do not say that we speak the truth in love. If we are going to put somebody down with the truth, do not say that we speak the truth in love.

Speak only what helps build people up according to their needs so that it benefits them.

Just because we are ready to share the truth does not mean the other person is prepared to hear it. We need to ask ourselves if someone is ready to receive the truth; that is part of loving them.

“There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, But the tongue of the wise promotes health.” (Proverbs 12:18)

Do we want to heal, or do we want to hurt others? When we are in a conflict, the solution is not deception but tact. We choose to either hurt or heal, either make a point or make an enemy.

How do we know when we are speaking the truth in love? It is pretty simple. We need to just ask ourselves for whose benefit we are saying something. If we are speaking the truth for someone else’s benefit, then God will honor our words and use them for good.

When is the best time to speak the truth to someone in love?

Heavenly Father, I will let no corrupt word proceed out of my mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. I want You to live through me with Your love and kindness coming from what I speak. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
