AUDIO VERSION

When we are worried, anxious, or overwhelmed, we cry out to God to speak to us most of the time. We look for God’s voice for guidance when we need something. The good news is that God always wants to hear from us and speak to us.

“Listen now to my voice; I will give you counsel, and God will be with you: Stand before God for the people, so that you may bring the difficulties to God.” (Exodus 18:19)

God is continually speaking to us. But often, we miss out on hearing God’s voice because we only look for God’s guidance when we need something, like a crisis or when we are facing a major decision. When we need to hear from God, we become confused and frustrated when we do not hear what we should do from God. We start to wonder how we can hear from God, and we start to focus on why we are not hearing from God instead of building a relationship with God.

“My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you, So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding; Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will understand the fear of the Lord, And find the knowledge of God.” (Proverbs 2:1-5)

God wants everyone to hear Him, and it is possible to do so. The key is to develop the kind of relationship with God that will empower us to hear God speaking to us. The closer we get to God, the more we can enjoy ongoing conversations with Him, both listening and hearing from God, and the more God will use those conversations to transform us into the person God wants us to become.

“Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; And hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. Let my teaching drop as the rain, My speech distill as the dew, As raindrops on the tender herb, And as showers on the grass.” (Deuteronomy 32:1-2)

By design, the best way we can hear from God is when we have a relationship with Him. God intends for us to figure out His will freely as we spend time with Him speaking with us moment by moment as we go through life. Then we will grow to understand God more and become more like Jesus.

Where is your relationship with God?

Heavenly Father, I know You are continually speaking to me. I receive Your words, and treasure Your commands within me, so that I incline my ear to wisdom, and apply my heart to understanding. Thank You for Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
