AUDIO VERSION

Many of us approach Father’s Day today with mixed emotions. Some of us had hands-on fathers who are available and interested in our lives; others have somewhat distant, disinterested fathers, while others still were abandoned by their fathers altogether, and some of us have fathers who are no longer with us.

“My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother;” (Proverbs 1:8)

One thing we have in common, no matter what kind of father we have or have had, is that we all have a Father in heaven and regardless of how our fathers on earth have treated us, we have a Father in heaven who has always been there and always will be there for us.

The Bible says that God is a “father of the fatherless.”

“A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, Is God in His holy habitation.” (Psalm 68:5)

One of the reasons Jesus was crucified was because He spoke of this special relationship He had with His father, and now, because of His death and resurrection, we can have that relationship, too.

“Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’” (John 20:17)

As you were growing up, if your father was disengaged, disinterested, and passive, you might think of God that way: disconnected, oblivious to what is going on in your life, not caring. Then again, if your father was involved, nurturing and affirming, you might apply those same qualities to your understanding of God.

If you want an accurate snapshot of God, a proper portrait of the Father, look at the story Jesus told about the prodigal son. The story is not all about the son; however, it is also about the loving father. And who is more qualified to talk about a loving father than Jesus?

“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” (Romans 8:15)

That is your Heavenly Father. Although He is God, there is intimacy; there is a relationship, closeness, and affection. If you want to know what kind of Father we have in heaven, look at Jesus. Because that is what your Father in heaven is like.

Happy Father’s Day from our family to yours. God bless you on your special day.

Heavenly Father, the Bible says that You are a “father of the fatherless”. As
Your example, make me into Your image of love, kindness, and mercy as I live before those around me. You so loved You gave, today, I love and give. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
