GOD WAS AND WILL ALWAYS BE FIRST

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

AUDIO VERSION

In the beginning, before anything or anyone else existed, God was there. God was and will always be First. There is no time before Him. God is the creator. God commands focus in everything: existence, creation, time, life, history, redemption, and eternity. There is a story that has been going on long before we arrived on the scene and one that will go on way after we are gone.

Look at the stars and try to count every one of them. It is impossible, right? Scientists say the universe is made up of 27 million parts, and each part has at least one galaxy. That would mean that the number of stars would be over 300 sextillion! That is a 300 with 23 zeros behind it.

Can we actually wrap our heads around the vastness and immensity of the universe that God created? Probably not. Understanding the greatness of God can be equally challenging. For us to begin to grasp the full picture of God, we must go back to the very beginning. God, who was there at the beginning of it all.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1:1-2)

"In the beginning, God." These four words are what introduces us to God. No other four words could be more important than these words. God, who has no beginning. God, who always is, always was, and always will be. This concept is understandably difficult. After all, our world revolves around beginnings and endings.

“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27)

From the moment we are born, we act and think as if the universe revolves around us. History is full of examples of our insatiable quest to make our names, fortunes, fame, and kingdoms as vast and enduring as possible.

“Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” (Psalm 90:2)

We have bought into that sense of entitlement and embraced a mindset of “it is all about me.” We live our lives as though life is our own movie, and history is our story, as though the earth is our living place for ourselves only, life is our playground, and God has nothing to do with any of it. In reality, we could not be further from the truth.

It is not about you. It is not about us. It is all about God. Acknowledging this fact and embracing it frees us to experience life, and life more abundantly. The way that God originally intended for it to be.

“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” (Colossians 3:17)

It is more than just putting God above every area of our lives. It is about putting God First in every area of our lives. God wants to be a part of every aspect of our lives, not just when we go to church, but every day of our lives.

Placing God First in every area of our lives, where God rightfully belongs, brings us the assurance and peace that our lives have meaning and purpose in something so much larger and grander than we could ever imagine.

Is God First in every aspect of your life?

Heavenly Father, creator of this world, creator of all that I can see, hear, or touch. Life itself is from You. You came to live in Your children as Your children have Your Holy Spirit living in them. I ask myself, do I really know what that means? Am I living my life to the full potential You have for me? Father, please open my eyes to see and my ears to hear what Your Holy Spirit is saying to me. I put You First above all, taking the Wisdom from Your Word to apply to my life as You are my guide. Anoint my eyes to see all that I have and all that I am in You. I seek You First today and for each day to come. All honor and praise belong to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
