AUDIO VERSION

The book of Philemon may be only 25 verses long, but it packs a powerful spiritual punch. Paul’s letter to Philemon gives us a window into Paul’s personal life and his relationships, showing us how Paul lived his faith in real life. From the beginning of the book to the last verse, you can see how much Paul cared about the Believers around him.

“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.” (Philemon 1:25)

We get a glimpse of Paul that we sometimes miss. Paul was not just the evangelist and missionary of the Gospel. He was compassionate for others, and we get to see the joy he experienced in his relationships with other Believers by sharing the Gospel and being of One Spirit in Jesus.

“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.” (John 14:16-17)

Before Jesus died on the cross, Jesus promised that after He had died, rose from the dead, and ascended to heaven, He would send the Spirit to be with His people. Jesus made a promise that when He left, His Spirit would be sent to live inside of Believers.

When Paul believed the Gospel and trusted Jesus to save him, that is when He was sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. If you are a Believer, then the Bible calls you God’s temple because God’s Spirit dwells in you too. As Believers, we literally possess the Spirit of God inside of us just how Paul ended the letter to Philemon.

“Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16)

The Holy Spirit is given to each of us so that we can know who God is and know how to follow God. Often the Holy Spirit will speak to us in our minds by giving us a thought or an idea. Or will lead us by making an impression upon our heart to say something, do something, or think something.

It is important to recognize that the Holy Spirit will never speak anything to us that does not align with the Bible. If it conflicts with anything in the Bible, then it is not from the Spirit of God.

As Jesus said, the Spirit will be with us forever. As Believers, we can have confidence that He will never leave us or let us down as we choose to follow Him all our days just like Paul.

Learn from the principles found in Philemon and the characteristics of Paul that will help you navigate your own complicated relationships in a way that pleases and honors God and builds the Kingdom of God.

Will you see the Holy Spirits leading in your life today?

Heavenly Father, You said You sent another Helper, that would abide with me forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but I know Him, for He dwells with me and now is in me as I have made Jesus my Lord and Savior. It is so easy for distractions to take my focus off Knowing I have a helper inside me. You said the Holy Spirit would lead and guide me into all truth. No wonder I have the Victory as I follow Him. I must obey Your Word and meditate Your Word as Joshua did, day and night. I am forever blessed in You as Your Holy Spirit leads me, no matter what would come my way. Victory in Jesus! Thank You, Father.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
