LOVE IS ACTION

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.

AUDIO VERSION

Today is Valentine's Day, and it is the day when all the candy is gone from the shelves at the stores, and the flowers are gone from the florist shops. In fact, more chocolate and roses are sold today than any other day. The restaurants love today too. Because all the sweethearts are bringing that special someone to go out to eat as well, and today is one of the busiest days of the year.

What does God have to say about love? What is the definition of love according to the Bible? Each of us has been given an abundance of Bible verses about loving others, so we can assume it is important.

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." (John 13:34-35)

Each of us has been commanded to love one another as Jesus loves us. There is not one person alive that Jesus does not love and did not come to save. This includes everyone you see as you walk past them on the sidewalk, hear about in the news, post on social media, living next door, stand behind in line at the store, or sit next to in the waiting room.

When we actively love those around us by putting their needs before our own needs, we are using the same amazing love that Jesus has poured out to us, and we become a living, breathing, beautiful display for humanity.

“Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;” (Romans 12:9-10)

You see, while many believe love is just a nice, heartwarming feeling, as Believers, we are called to be more than just a nice, heartwarming feeling. We are called to take action. Every one of us is called to share God's love by noticing the unnoticed people, loving the unlovely people, or even by extending grace to those people who are not so easy to be around.

“distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.” (Romans 12:13-16)

When we look at how to love others, the Bible offers plenty of insight and gives us great examples of love in action:

  • Love from the heart and do not fake it.
  • Run from evil and hold on for dear life to good.
  • Be good friends with people who love deeply.
  • Practice playing second.
  • Help the people less fortunate than you.
  • Be hospitable to everyone around you.
  • Bless your enemies and no cursing under your breath.
  • Laugh with your friends when they are happy.
  • Comfort others when they are sad.
  • Get along with each other.
  • Do not be stuck-up.
  • Make friends with people you do not know.

The list goes on and on...

Let's make it our prayer today to ask God to help us actively love others. To walk across the street to help our neighbors, to cook a warm meal for a friend in need, or to visit a nearby nursing home to love on the elderly.

Let us ask God to lead us to places where He wants us to shine His light and ask God for the courage and strength to share His love with all who surround us in our daily lives so that we guide people to God and they, too, will begin to love others actively, and then, who knows how many lives will be impacted by our love today.

Will you make a point to show love to everyone today?

Heavenly Father, what an example of Love that You have shown to me. You loved and gave Jesus to live, die, and then be resurrected for me. No wonder Love is the most important display to others. You came to live within my heart, why wouldn’t that Love be the most important. This is how I show others You. I will shine Your light with courage and strength as I am kind, not rude, but forgiving, I won’t seek my own, nor get provoked, I will think no evil nor rejoice in iniquity. I will rejoice in the truth. I will bear all things, believe all things, hope all things, endure all things. Love truly never fails. Your love for me will never fail. I will display my Redeemer; I will walk in Love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
