SPIRITUAL GIFTS
If we are willing to admit it or not, most of us who follow Jesus have wondered if we have a spiritual gift.
"Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ." (1 Corinthians 11:1)
Just like any other comparison, it is easier to see the spiritual gifts of others than it is to see our own. We can become so focused on what we do not have that we do not see or use our own spiritual gifts.
“so that you come short in no gift, eagerly waiting for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ,” (1 Corinthians 1:7)
Paul addressed this same problem with the church in Corinth when the comparison of spiritual gifts began causing division in the church.
“Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.” (1 Corinthians 1:10)
There are no different "levels" of spiritual gifts. Each spiritual gift is God's, so all are equally powerful and just as special to the person they are given.
To illustrate, let us mentally step into a room with the "lights off" for a moment. The room is full of people, and each of us has one flashlight. We can shine our flashlight, or we can watch others shine their flashlights and convince ourselves that the other person's battery power must be stronger than ours because their light seems brighter.
If everyone starts comparing their flashlights instead of turning on their flashlights and using them, the room will not get any lighter. Now, what if everyone in the room turns on their flashlights at the same time? The combined power will light up the whole room.
God is all-powerful, and every gift He gives us has the potential to be world-changing.
“There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:4)
We tend to do the same thing as the example above when it comes to our spiritual gifts. We watch other people and compare their "results" to our own. God's power isn't weak in some areas and strong in other areas.
“But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:” (1 Corinthians 12:7)
God's power is in every gift He gives us and inside of us has the power to change the world. We have exactly what we need to change our surroundings. We cannot change anything around us unless we use the gifts God gave us. We have everything we need in Jesus to change our surroundings, using the gifts and tools God has given us.
What is one of your spiritual gifts?
Heavenly Father, I am so thankful for the gifts You have given to the body of Christ. Your gifts and callings are without repentance, as You have said in Your Word. I seek Your will, and I ask You to reveal to me the calling You have for my life. I want to be that light that shines for You, knowing I have been obedient. I want to hear “Well, done thou good and faithful” when I see You face to face. My Father, I give myself to Your calling as I walk in all You have provided for me. I walk in Your strength, and I walk in victory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
