CHOOSING YOUR WORDS WISELY
Think about the past 24 hours. Take a moment and think about the words that came out of your mouth. Did your words build people up, or did your words tear people down?
“A fool’s mouth is his destruction, And his lips are the snare of his soul.” (Proverbs 18:7)
The average person speaks roughly 16,000 words a day. That is a lot of words, especially when God cares about each and every word that comes out of our mouths.
“If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.” (James 1:26)
James wrote that if we consider ourselves people of faith but do not control our tongues, our beliefs are worthless. How do we know if we are using our words wisely?
Proverbs 15 describes the difference between the words the wise speak and the words the foolish speak. Fools love to hear the sound of their own voice, speaking first and thinking later. Their words often land them in trouble.
They talk bad about others and speak highly about themselves. They do not like correction and refuse wise advice. The wise know how to choose their words, speak kindness, and share wisdom.
“But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.” (Matthew 12:36)
Every word we speak is an opportunity to build up others or tear them down, to give God glory, or promote ourselves. Jesus warned us that we will all have to give an account for every careless word we speak.
Take time today and think about what words you say. Let us not waste any more words.
Who do you know who could use some words of encouragement today?
Heavenly Father, I do not want my words to be my destruction at all. I will be transformed by the renewing of my mind as Your Word says to do. Your Word says by my words, I am justified or condemned. You live in me, and Your Holy Spirit is in me to guide me, now the choice to listen to the still small voice is up to me. I choose to be the carrier of encouragement to others, speaking right words over others with Your heart of compassion. Even in the times, I do not agree; I have a choice to pray for Your heart to speak and not to choose the enemy’s words. You so loved all the world, and you gave Jesus. I forsake all and follow You. That includes my words. Thank You, Father. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
