If we are supposed to choose the people we allow into our lives carefully, we should be even more careful about choosing our friends. Notice that we do get to choose. God leads, guides, and gives us guidelines. But ultimately, who our friends are is up to us—good or bad, it comes down to our decisions.
“The righteous should choose his friends carefully, For the way of the wicked leads them astray.” (Proverbs 12:26)
There are many people God would not want us to be influenced by, and there are quite a few other options that fall within God’s will for our lives. And in those cases, it is our choice. The bottom line is, we follow our preferences.
When we take a step back and look at the people that influence us, sometimes we look at them and think, “There is no way I would allow that kind of person in my life.” It could be family background, spiritual foundation, or personalities that do not lead us closer to God. They do not have the same amount of energy or ambition. They do not even have the same values and goals, but they are the people we spend time with and influence us.
God may not tell us who to hang out with, but He does give us principles that will help us make wise decisions.
There are few better gifts in life than a good friend. Relying on God’s guidance can help us make wise decisions.

Heavenly Father, I lean on and trust in You for the leading for my life. I want to be sensitive to the friends I choose. You give me guidelines in Your Word, and as I study Your Word, lead me to the character of friends that are like Your Word says. Thank You, Father. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
