Wise people are not looking for a fight. They are looking for peace, and they do not intentionally antagonize other people and create chaos.

“It is honorable for a man to stop striving, Since any fool can start a quarrel.” (Proverbs 20:3)

If we spend time with someone for any length of time, we will figure out what irritates that person. When the other person says something that hurts, offends, or slights us in any way, we use that information against them. We push the hot button, and it works every time.

The Bible calls this kind of behavior foolish. It does not get us any closer to resolution or help our relationship with that person. It hurts the relationship, and it is not wise. We all use counterproductive strategies in our relationships. They are hurtful and harmful to everyone in the relationship, including ourselves, and it does not get us what we want from the relationship. When we lack wisdom, we use them anyway.

When in a heated argument, never compare your wife, husband, kids, boss, or anyone else because each person is unique. Comparing antagonizes anger. And when we are not comparing, we are condemning.

When we start laying on the guilt in a relationship, we get the opposite of what we expect. It does not work, and it is foolish.

Wisdom is the art of knowing what to overlook. Some things are not worth our time; we need to overlook them.

“He who is slow to wrath has great understanding, But he who is impulsive exalts folly.” (Proverbs 14:29)

Have you ever said or done anything out of anger? Everyone has done it. When we get angry, our control goes out the window. We say and do foolish things that are self-defeating.

When we get angry, we hurt others and ourselves with our anger.

The good news is that we do not have to let our anger get the best of us. We can choose to be a peacemaker, not a troublemaker. Follow the wise advice of Proverbs today: Control your temper and stay out of arguments. You and the people you are in a relationship with will be glad you did.

When have you chosen to stay out of an argument or to control your temper? What was the result?

Heavenly Father, as I listen and obey Your words of wisdom, I will put them into practice in my life. I ask Your Holy Spirit to make me aware of my words and actions. As a child of the King, I will live for You and in honor preferring one another as You guide me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
