AUDIO VERSION

Today's Bible verse is a challenge for all of us, and it challenges us to keep our tongues from speaking evil and our lips from telling lies. That might not seem easy when we think about it.

"For "He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit." (1 Peter 3:10)

The good news about God is that God does not give us a challenge without knowing that we can complete it. This will take work and self-control on our part, but we can do it.

We can be determined to speak good things about others. We can choose to tell the truth.

Our words can send love, comfort, joy, and charity into the people's lives around us. Or, they can bring down those same people to the core of their being. It is up to us to carefully consider the words we speak.

Wise people slow down enough to think about how their words will be received and their effect on the other person's future.

Our words are powerful, and when we ask God to guard our mouths, we acknowledge the importance of saying what we mean and meaning what we say.

Asking God to set a guard over our mouth is more than a prayer for self-control when we are angry, and it is a request for self-control in everything we say.

We are not alone either when it comes to changing these habits. The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit is our helper, and He will help us do it.

How many times do we talk bad about other people? How often do we stretch the truth of what happened a little bit? It is so easy to fall into the habit of speaking bad things.

God will give us the ability to make these changes in our lives, and He can help you change your habits so you can begin to have self-control in everything you say.

Heavenly Father, put a watch over my mouth that I sin not with my tongue. My words must build people up and not tear them down. Our words paint pictures to the other person, so I must consider what I am painting with words to the listener. I want Jesus and the right character to flow from me. Please help me, Father. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
