HUMILITY VS. PRIDE
Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.
Pride destroys our relationships with others, but humility is the antidote to pride. Humility builds relationships. Where pride shows up in a lot of different ways, like criticism, competition, stubbornness, and superficiality. The bottom line is that pride destroys relationships.
“Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.” (1 Peter 5:5-6)
The problem with pride is that pride is deceiving. Everyone else can see the pride in us but ourselves. When we have a problem with our pride, we never see the pride in our lives.
“Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18)
First pride, then everything crashes, and the result is the bigger the ego, the harder the fall.
“Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous;” (1 Peter 3:8)
How do we grow in humility? It happens by letting Jesus begin to control our thoughts, hearts, attitudes, and reactions. Jesus has to be a part of our everyday life.
“and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.” (Ephesians 4:23-24)
How do we become a new person in Jesus? How do we begin to change the way we are thinking? In relationships, we tend to become like the people we spend time with the most. If we spend time with grumpy people, we get grumpier. If we spend time with happy people, we get happier.
“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.” (Philippians 2:3)
What happens to us when we spend more time with Jesus? We become more humble! Jesus is humble and Jesus wants a relationship with us. Jesus wants us to spend time with Him in prayer and reading God’s Word and talking to Him. Jesus is humble, and as we get to know Jesus more, we will become more like Him.
“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,” (Philippians 2:5-6)
No one has been more humble than Jesus coming down from Heaven to Earth to become a person, living for us, giving His life for us, and being raised from the dead for us. When we spend time around Jesus, it makes us more humble, and that builds our relationships.
How do you need to change the way you think about others to be more like Jesus?
Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your written Word to me which says for all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous. Then You said to be renewed in the spirit of my mind, and that I am to put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. I make the decision to allow nothing to be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind, I will esteem others better than myself. By honoring others with an unselfish love, I am honoring You. Yes, let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me today and in the days to come. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
