WE ARE CREATED TO GROW
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.
God created us to grow by relying on what God has given us, and then we take steps to grow. We all want to grow from where we are right now to some better state in the future. We all want better health, better relationships, and to be closer to God.
“But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.” (2 Peter 1:5-7)
How do we go from where we are now to where God wants us to be? Let us face it; most of us do not know how to move forward.
The problem is not that we lack the knowledge. The problem is that we lack the power to do what we need to be done. When we want to grow, we need more than just steps to grow. We need God's help so that we can actually do what we know we should be doing, and that is where today’s Bible verses are going to help us.
How do we grow in every area of our lives? We can grow in every area of our lives because God cares about every part of our lives. God cares about our souls, and God cares about our emotions, our relationships, our work lives, our families, and our physical health. God cares about it all. God does not just want part of our life. God wants all of it.
Peter’s answers provide us clear, practical advice and the power we need to do what we know we should. Peter tells us what God has already done for us.
“as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” (2 Peter 1:3-4)
Remember, no one knew this better than Peter because he was a close friend and follower of Jesus. He was an eyewitness of Jesus’ life and ministry.
Peter makes it clear that God gives us everything we need to grow. The foundation for our growth is God’s power and grace. God gives us everything we need to grow. We do not have to earn it. It is available to all of us. We do not need to rely on our power; we need to rely on God’s power because His power will give us everything that we need.
For what reason were we made? To know God. What goal should we set for ourselves in our lives? To know God. What is the eternal life that Jesus gave to us? Knowledge of God.
“And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (John 17:3)
What is the best thing in life that brings us more joy, delight, and contentment than anything else? Knowledge of God.
“Thus says the LORD: “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches;” (Jeremiah 9:23)
Once we become aware that the main business that we are here for is to know God, most of life’s problems will fall into a place of their own. We need to work on knowing God more and loving others more. Use the resources that God provides to make changes in our lives. We are not alone. God will give us everything that we need when we need it.
Heavenly Father, my heart knows the main business I am here for is to know You. You created me to live for You. I know most of life’s problems will fall into a place of their own. I will work on knowing You more, and loving others more. I will use the resources that You provide to make changes in my life. I know I am not alone. You will give me everything that I need when I need it. I will seek You first in all things and live a life of honor and integrity in serving You. I will not glory in wisdom, might, or riches, but only glory in understanding and knowing You as You are lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. All Praise and Glory to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
