WE ARE LIKE THE SHEEP THAT HAVE GONE ASTRAY
All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
What is that thing in every one of us that causes us to go astray? We know what we should do. We even know what we are about to do is wrong, but we still do it anyway. We know what is good for us and what is bad for us and still choose the bad anyway. It does not make any sense. We are like rogue sheep.
“All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:6)
We know it would be better for us to follow the shepherd. We know it is safer to stay with the flock. But we wander anyway. We wander away from the guidance and security of home and find ourselves alone, lost, and wounded by the world we wandered in.
Notice what Isaiah says in today’s Bible verse, “We have turned, every one, to his own way” That is the key. Sin in us causes us to do what we want to do even if we know deep down it is not in our best interest. Sin causes us to live a lie. We then choose to follow our will instead of the will of God.
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
Now, what do we do? We find ourselves alone, lost, and wounded like the Prodigal son. The Prodigal son began to remember what it was really like to live in his father’s household. He remembered the love, the guidance, the security that living there provided. This moved the son to repent and go home. He stopped living the lie and returned home.
“But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.” ’ “And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him.” (Luke 15:17-20)
To the Prodigal son’s amazement, before he even got to the house, he was greeted by his father running to see him while he was still a good distance away. His father had been waiting, longing, and looking for his son to return. When he saw his son in the distance, he could not help but run to him and welcome him home.
“And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry.” (Luke 15:21-24)
Are you far away from home today? Do you find yourself taking the first steps to leave your Father’s home? Stop and turn back to the truth. Do not live the lie that the enemy wants you to believe. Following your own will won’t get you what you want or need in your life.
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
Our only hope is in God because He sent Jesus to die on the cross for our sins, so that we might be forgiven and have eternal life. God wants us to be restored in our relationship with Him and be able to experience the fullness of all God has prepared for us.
Are you experiencing the fullness of all God has prepared for you?
Heavenly Father, You are my loving Father, that has given Your only begotten Son so that now I have everlasting life and I do not have to perish. I know Your Love, for me, is the most precious Love I will ever know. As I honor You and so appreciate and I am so thankful for that Love, I will keep my heart and mind focused on You. I choose to follow Your will instead of my own will as I renew my mind with Your Word each day. I will not allow the world influence of deception to come against Your will for me. Now that You are my Good Shepherd, I do not want. Your provision and promises are all I need. I am now able to experience the fullness of all You have prepared for me. This is the real life as I am now living in You. Thank You, Father. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
