GOD RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY

Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.

AUDIO VERSION

Rest is important to God. In fact, God wants you to take a day off every week. That is called the Sabbath, which literally means a day of rest, and God wants us to do it every seventh day. The actual day of the week may not be important. It does not have to be a certain day of the week, just every seventh day.

“Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.” (Genesis 2:1-2)

It is so important that even God rested on the seventh day when He created everything, not because God was tired, but to give us an example of how we should rest.

Why does the enemy hate the Sabbath? Because the seventh day identifies the true God and, He, as Creator. God anticipated the controversy over the Genesis account of His creation. God knew that after the fall of man, there would be doubts about His commanding creation to exist.

The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”  (Genesis 1:2)

God established a mark that showed His absolute right to rule as Creator. He memorialized the event by setting aside the seventh day of the Creation week as a holy day of rest and remembering.

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.” (Exodus 20:8–11)

Once every seven days, as the earth rotates on its axis through space, the seventh day reminder travels around the entire earth, reaching every man, woman, and child with the message of creation and the One who did all the creating.

Why did God say, remember? Because to forget the seventh day is to forget the true Creator.

Does it really matter that much?

God rested on the seventh day not because He was tired, but because He had completed His work. God, who is infinite in power, does not need to rest from being tired. God does not require any energy source to complete Him or replenish Him because God is completely self-sufficient.

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

On the seventh day, the day of rest, we stop our work, just as God showed us, but where we need to be replenished, God does not.

God made us so that we need rest. If your car engine heat light is showing red, you will stop because you would know it is going to damage the engine. God says if you do not take one day off out of seven to rest and if you keep working all day, every day, seven days a week, your engine is going to burnout. Your best requires sufficient rest. You need to take the time to rest every week to be efficient.

We need to recharge our emotions, just by being quiet or reconnecting in our relationships and by refocusing our spirit.

During the Sabbath, you do not take a day off from God. You need to worship Him! Worshiping God puts life into perspective. If you are too busy for God, you are just too busy. To make this happen, you have to make time for Him and schedule it.

“It is vain for you to rise up early, To sit up late, To eat the bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep.” (Psalm 127:2)

God enjoys giving rest to His children. Be intentional about taking your Sabbath, spend time with God, and make it count!

Heavenly Father, I honor You, above all else. You are Almighty God, Creator of heaven, and earth. As I worship You, I ask You to show me how to remember the Sabbath Day as You have for my life. I want to honor and obey You in this world of busyness in which we live. There are so many distractions in life, and I want to set apart the time to honor You as Your Word says. When life is said and done, I want You to say to me, “Well done thou good and faithful servant. I set my heart to honor You, not to please myself or in keeping too busy. Praise be to my God!!  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
