David highlights the power of our words and the importance of self control in what comes out of our mouths.

Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips. Psalm 141:3

It is easy to speak without thinking, letting our emotions and feelings guide our words. We might snap at a friend, gossip about a coworker, or complain. These moments can lead to hurt feelings, misunderstandings, and damaged relationships.

Like David, we need to ask God for help taming our tongues and using our words wisely. By asking God to set a guard over his mouth, David acknowledges that he cannot control his words alone. This is a powerful reminder that we all need divine assistance to manage our words effectively.

It is not about silencing ourselves entirely but speaking with intention and kindness. When we invite God into our conversations, we become more aware of how our words affect others and ourselves.

Just as a guard prevents unauthorized access and a door controls what comes in and goes out, we should be mindful of what we allow to leave our mouths. David encourages us to pause and think before speaking, ensuring that our words are constructive instead of destructive.

Taming our tongues requires a heart aligned with the Word of God. It means cultivating patience, empathy, and gentleness in our interactions and being slow to speak and quick to listen.

So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; James 1:19

When we practice this, our relationships can thrive, and we can create a more positive environment around us. By continually seeking the guidance of God, we can develop the self control needed to guard our mouths.

Make it a daily practice to ask God to help you speak life and encouragement in the lives of those around you. In doing so, you honor God and build others up, reflecting His love and grace through your words.

Heavenly Father, Your Words and Spirit are life. I seek You first in all I say, do, and think. Please help put a guard over my mouth as I do not want to sin in any way with my tongue. Your Words are life and I want life coming forth from my tongue. Thank you, Father, for life giving words of wisdom. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
