RESTING IN GOD
My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength, And my refuge, is in God.
DAILY READING PLAN
BIBLE IN A YEAR
Isaiah 13:1-22 ; Revelation 14:1-20
When we carve out time to rest in God by taking a physical break and filling up our spirits, we gain hope and acquire strength to face the challenges of life.
My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength, And my refuge, is in God. Psalm 62:5-7
When David says for God Alone, he emphasizes that there is no sure refuge for the soul other than God. Every other wall or refuge behind which we may try to hide will eventually be exposed.
We probably all know what it is like to be faced with a challenge (to our safety or plans or identity etc.) and to run to a false refuge,
Which is to run to the statistics, achievements, victories, promises of a new relationship or lifestyle, etc.
Those things may feel like a refuge for a time, but ultimately, every one of those things will be torn down. When we find ourselves hiding in and hoping for something other than who God is for us in Jesus, we are in a false and crumbling refuge.
David tried to depict that in this image by showing the city walls broken down while the refuge and mighty tower of God stands unmoved at the center. Ultimately, God is the refuge of His people in Jesus, which is why the tower in this image is the body of Jesus.
The wounds of His death in our place become the doorway by which we enter the Refuge of God, that is to say, the Refuge of fellowship with God in His Son by His Spirit, a company that is itself eternal life and into which we will forever be drawn further up and further in.
As we go onward and upward, God will be with us in the highs, and He will refresh us in the lows.
Settle your soul and rest with God today.
What grade would you give yourself in the area of rest? What will you do this week to carve out time to slow down and spend some time alone with God?
Heavenly Father, I am thankful for the rest found only in You. As Your Word says, seek You first it is for a reason. When I seek You first, all the other things will be added unto me. This is the blessing of You, Lord, and it is seeking You first. I will seek You first so that I will have peace in the midst of any storm I may face. All praise to You, Father God. In Jesus name, Amen.
